PT PGN LNG Indonesia, as part of Pertamina’s Gas Subholding, has joined the development of a gasification project in North Papua, intended to strengthen the gas supply chain through the development of LNG infrastructure for power plants in the region.

The North Papua gasification project will support the operation of seven main power plants with a total capacity of 168 MW. The project also requires an average gas supply of 20.83 BBTUD over the next 20 years.

“This gasification project is a manifestation of realizing the Net Zero Emission 2060 target. PGN LNG Indonesia has the opportunity to contribute to providing LNG as clean energy which has an important role as a transitional energy for reducing carbon emissions in Indonesia,” President Director of PT PGN LNG Indonesia, Nofrizal, said as quoted in a statement on Friday, December 20, 2024.

The LNG infrastructure development will be carried out by Papua Bersama Consortium, consisting of PT Pertamina International Shipping, PT PGN LNG Indonesia, PT Enviromate Technology International and PT APCA Tirta Engineering.

“PGN LNG Indonesia supports efforts to improve the reliability of energy supply as well as national energy security,” Nofrizal cited.

Papua Bersama Consortium is an initiative formed with the aim of enhancing cooperation between various parties for development in Papua. It was established with the support from various parties in the central and local governments, as well as international institutions that encourage inclusive development in Papua. Overall, Papua Bersama Consortium aims to be a platform for collaboration, coordination, and innovation to encourage sustainable gas infrastructure development.

PLN EPI President Director Iwan Agung Firstantara said that this strategic cooperation is an important step to ensure a more stable and sustainable energy supply in North Papua, while optimizing the existing gas supplies to meet national gas needs.

“This project is not only about building gas infrastructure, but also about building strong synergy between various parties to ensure security of energy supply in this strategic region. With the signing of the Joint Development Agreement (JDA) today, we are confident that the next steps such as design, funding and construction will proceed faster,” Iwan said.
