President Prabowo Subianto held a meeting with United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of President Prabowo’s visit to attend the G20 Summit in Brazil on Sunday, November 17, 2024.
In the meeting, President Prabowo emphasized Indonesia’s commitment to supporting UN efforts on issues of food security, poverty alleviation, human rights violations, and the crisis in Palestine.
Prabowo also expressed his appreciation for Guterres’ dedication in supporting international peace and justice.
“We highly appreciate, respect, and support your consistent stance in upholding international peace, justice, and international law. This attitude really inspires us, because you are consistent in this regard,” Prabowo said as quoted in a statement on Monday, November 18, 2024.
Meanwhile, the UN Secretary-General praised Indonesia’s strategic role in international cooperation, considering Indonesia an important partner for the UN.
“We agree with Indonesia in relation to important aspects that we face in the world today,” Guterres said.
Guterres also highlighted Indonesia’s active contribution to ASEAN-UN cooperation and its important role in addressing the situation in Myanmar and the Middle East region. He expressed the UN’s readiness to continue to strengthen cooperation with Indonesia in realizing reforms to the UN Security Council and international financial institutions to achieve global justice.
“Indonesia has played a very important role in the upcoming G20 Summit and we want to continue to work with Indonesia in preparation for future reforms,” Guterres said.
Climate change and renewable energy
During the meeting, President Prabowo reiterated Indonesia’s commitment to support global efforts in tackling climate change and transitioning to renewable energy.
“The UN Secretary General highly respects Indonesia’s position om various issues including climate change. Indonesia highly supports measures to reduce carbon emissions and we have plans and the capability to move towards renewable energy,” he said.
Prabowo cited that Indonesia has huge potential in developing green energy, including geothermal, hydro, solar energy and bioenergy, simultaneously conveying
his appreciation for the support of the UN secretary general on the measures taken by Indonesia.
“Indonesia is perceived as an important country now, and he hopes that Indonesia will continue to have proactive and supporting positions,” he said.
The Indonesian president maintained his commitment to bring Indonesia to sustain green energy transition as part of contribution for global development.
“We hope to achieve our net zero emission target. We move towards that,” he concluded.
