Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY), has hinted at a possible extension for the development of the new Nusantara Capital City (IKN).
Under the administration of President Prabowo Subianto, infrastructure development priorities will shift to other regions, although work on IKN will continue.
AHY emphasized that the continuation of IKN’s development would be closely aligned with the national budget.
“President Prabowo has made it clear that there must be no inefficient infrastructure projects, and certainly no budget leakages,” he told a press conference at the Ministry of Public Works and Housing, on Wednesday, October 23, 2024 .
The government is planning to revise the timeline for IKN’s construction soon, while also adjusting the priority development map through 2029.
In the next five years, the focus of IKN’s development will be on the Central Government Core Area (KIPP), located within the 1A development zone, the heart of the new capital.
Key areas within KIPP, including legislative and judicial buildings, will be prioritized. The legislative zone will be situated near the ministry complexes, while the judicial zone will be located closer to government employee housing.
Basuki Hadimuljono, Head of the IKN Authority, previously stated that construction of the legislative and judicial areas is expected to be completed by 2026, in line with President Prabowo’s directives.
“Both zones must be fully built within the next two years,” Basuki affirmed, on Monday, October 21, 2024.
Earlier this month, then President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo mentioned that the Presidential Decree (Keppres) regarding the capital’s relocation should be signed by the new President, Prabowo Subianto, once the necessary infrastructure in IKN is ready.
Jokowi highlighted that critical infrastructure such as hospitals, educational facilities, and public amenities, like restaurants, must be in place before the Keppres is enacted.
Therefore, he suggested that the decree be finalized during Prabowo’s presidency to ensure everything is properly prepared.
