One day after the inauguration of the Red-and-White Cabinet of President Prabowo Subianto, Foreign Minister Sugiono, on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, flew to Russia for the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, after a brief stopover in Aceh.

Sugiono, who is also Deputy Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Gerindra Party, is representing Indonesia at the BRICS Summit, a major economic bloc consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates

He is accompanied by Tri Tharyat, Director General of Multilateral Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and other delegation members.

The decision for Indonesia to join BRICS will ultimately rest with the Prabowo administration. Indonesia has been invited to join the economic bloc, with discussions initiated during the 15th BRICS Summit in Johannesburg in August 2023.

Then Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi had indicated that ongoing evaluations would assess the economic benefits of such a move.

Prabowo was also invited to the summit but chose not to attend, citing the need to focus on the ongoing government transition following his inauguration as President, alongside Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, on Sunday, October 20, 2024
