Indonesia state owned energy company PT Pertamina has sealed a deal with Siemens Energy to realize safe and affordable sustainable energy in Indonesia following the signing of a memorandum of understanding on business opportunities and potential collaboration for technology acceleration in Jakarta on Tuesday, August 13, 2024.

The MoU was signed by Pertamina’s Director for Strategy, Portfolio and Business Development, Salyadi Saputra, and Thorbjörn Fors, Senior Vice President and Managing Director of Siemens Energy Asia Pacific.

“Through the Memorandum of Understanding between Pertamina and Siemens Energy, we are taking a step forward for proactive and visionary energy leadership. This collaboration is more than just a strategic alliance, it is a combination of expertise, resources, and collective efforts to address the energy trilemma and ensure that energy is safe, sustainable, and affordable,” Salyadi said in a statement quoted on Wednesday, August 14, 2024.

He suggested that this collaboration reflects cooperation between energy and technology companies to produce technology and innovation as well as creates added value for stakeholders, communities and the environment.

“We will utilize the potential of new renewable resources as a transitional energy step as well as encourage economic growth,” Salyadi said.

Meanwhile, Thorbjörn Fors said that Pertamina and Siemens Energy have the same vision to become a sustainable company and carry out the energy transition in Indonesia.

“Indonesia has the potential to lead the energy transition, and our partnership with Pertamina is the foundation to build a sustainable future for Indonesia. Siemens Energy is not just a technology provider, we are a partner to shape a new energy landscape based on tradition and progress,” Thorbjörn said.

In the memorandum of understanding, there are three main programs that will be implemented. First, Power-to-X which is an innovative technology to generate new ways of renewable energy production and storage.

Second, upstream wastewater heat energy utilization. In this program, heat from process waste water can be reused, resulting in energy efficiency and sustainability.

Third, Decarbonization of the Marine Sector, which will be useful for monitoring and managing carbon emissions in the maritime industry.

Pertamina’s Senior Vice President for Research & Technology Innovation, Oki Muraza, specifically highlighted the energy utilization program as one of the big leaps in production system. By utilizing advanced heat utilization technology from Siemens Energy, Pertamina can increase the efficiency of its upstream operations, while also reducing its carbon footprint.

“This is one of the circular economy in the energy sector,” Oki said.
