MIND ID, Indonesia’s state-owned mining holding company, has reported a significant increase in its renewable energy consumption to 18.25 Gigajoules (GJ), equivalent to 5,068 Gigawatt hours (GWh) in 2023, reflecting a 6.55 percent rise compared to the previous year.

MIND ID, the Indonesian state-owned mining holding company, has successfully boosted its renewable energy consumption to 18.25 Gigajoules (GJ) or 5,068 Gigawatt hours (GWh) throughout 2023. This marks a 6.55 percent increase from the 17.12 million GJ recorded in 2022.

Heri Yusuf, Corporate Secretary of MIND ID, said that this green energy consumption accounted for approximately 41 percent of the total energy use of the MIND ID Group last year.

“Total green energy consumption contributed about 41 percent of the total energy use of the MIND ID Group last year,” Heri Yusuf, Corporate Secretary of MIND ID, said on Wednesday, June 26, 2024.

MIND ID’s holding members are focused on completing several energy diversification projects to actively contribute to the decarbonization program. The group consistently undertakes various efforts to reduce carbon emissions while gradually increasing the share of renewable energy in their operations.

“We are committed to realizing a mining sector with responsible and sustainable operations,” Heri said.

MIND ID aims to reduce emissions from the energy sector and Industrial Process and Product Uses (IPPU). The group targets a 16 percent reduction in its carbon footprint by 2030 from the business-as-usual emission levels.

Among the renewable energy projects, PT Bukit Asam (PTBA) is advancing the development of solar power plants (PLTS). The company also plays a critical role in managing minerals and coal, which are key to clean technology.

Heri highlighted the global demand for natural resources, including nickel and copper, necessary for transitioning to a low-carbon economy. These resources are crucial for producing electric vehicle batteries and energy storage systems.

This initiative aligns with MIND ID’s broader strategy to promote sustainable and responsible mining practices, ensuring long-term environmental benefits and contributing to Indonesia’s renewable energy goals.
