The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has named a number of suspects in its investigation into the alleged corruption within the Directorate General of Railways (DJKA), the Ministry of Transportation.

KPK spokesman, Ali Fikri, stated that this decision is part of the ongoing investigation at the Ministry of Transportation.

“Several individuals from the Ministry of Transportation, the private sector, and also a corporation have been named as suspects,” Ali Fikri said on Wednesday, May 22, 2024.

The naming of suspects in the corruption case stems from a sting operation held by the KPK on April 11, 2023, at the Railway Engineering Center in Central Java.

Following this operation, KPK named 11 individuals as suspects and detained them for their alleged involvement in corruption related to railway construction and maintenance projects in Java, Sumatra, and Sulawesi.

The suspects accused of offering bribes are:

  • Dion Renato Sugiarto (Director of PT IPA);
  • Muchamad Hikmat (Director of PT DF);
  • Yoseph Ibrahim (former Director of PT KA Management Property);
  • Parjono (Vice President of PT KA Management Property);
  • Asta Danika (Director of PT Bhakti Karya Utama).

The suspects accused of accepting bribes are:

  • Harno Trimadi (Director of Railway Infrastructure);
  • Putu Sumarjaya (Head of the Central Java Railway Engineering Center);
  • Bernard Hasibuan (Commitment Making Officer at the Central Java Railway Engineering Center);
  • Achmad Affandi (Commitment Making Officer at the South Sulawesi Railway Engineering Center);
  • Fadliansyah (Commitment Making Officer for Railway Infrastructure Maintenance);
  • Syntho Pirjani Hutabarat (Commitment Making Officer at the West Java Railway Engineering Center).

These suspects are alleged to have received bribes amounting to 5-10 percent of the project value, with the total bribes received estimated at around Rp14.5 billion (US$901,630). The trial for this corruption case is currently ongoing at the Corruption Court of the Semarang District Court.

The court has so far sentenced Putu Sumarjaya, Head of the Central Java Railway Engineering Center, to five years in prison and fined Rp350 million. The verdict is lower than the eight-year imprisonment demanded by the prosecutor.
