An Indonesian legislator has proposed to the 10th World Water Forum currently underway in Bali for the establishment of a parliamentary caucus to accelerate the provision of solutions to water problems, including access to clean water.

“So we should mobilize all parliaments to oversee water issues,” Deputy Chairman of the Indonesian House of Representatives’ Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Agency (BKSAP), Putu Supadma Rudana, told the plenaary session of the Parliamentary Meeting of the 10th World Water Forum on Monday, May 20, 2024.

Putu spoke alongside Executive Secretary of the UN Economic and Social Commission, Armida Alisjahbana; President of Club de Madrid, Danilo Turk; Vice President of the Australasian-Pacific and Pacific Association of Hydrogeologists, Sarah Bourke; and Member of the National Assembly of Ivory Coast, Euphrasie Liliane-Chantal Yameogo.

Putu said that this parliamentary caucus could be practiced in the participating countries of the 10th World Water Forum. Indonesia has established the Water Caucus in the House of Representatives (DPR).

Putu, who is also a member of the Bureau Committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), encouraged the formation of the caucus among IPU’s 190 member countries.

“This parliamentary caucus can accelerate the world water agenda,” he said.

The Parliamentary Meeting is part of the political session of the 10th World Water Forum held in Nusa Dua, Bali on May 18-25, 2024.
