Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, on Monday, April 22, 2024, met with Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong discussing a number of strategic issues, including carbon capture storage (CCS).

“This will generate new opportunities for Singapore and Indonesia, and deepen our interdependence,” Premier Lee said as quoted from his Instagram account on Wednesday, April 24, 2024.

Luhut said the collaboration is in line with Indonesia’s capabilities, boasting that Indonesia is the fastest Asia Pacific country in drafting CCS regulations.

“For example, the realization of cross-border CCS will be a significant leap for the two countries to build low-carbon industries,” Luhut said as quoted from his Instagram account on Wednesday, April 24, 2024.

Luhut said that Wong expressed his interest in collaborating on the realization of CCS. Wong said he was ready to carry out preliminary studies on the cooperation plan.

Indonesia issued Presidential Regulation No. 14/2024 on the Implementation of Carbon Capture and Storage Activities with a number of requirements to enable Indonesia to carry out carbon capture storage (CCS). According to the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources (ESDM), Indonesia has a carbon storage potential of more than 577 Gigatons, saline aquifer carbon of 572.77 Gigatons, and depleted oil & gas reservoirs of 4.85 Gigatons.

Besides CCS, the meeting also discussed a number of pressing issues, such as health, renewable energy and sustainability.
