The Contractor Partnership Contract (KKKS), Mubadala Energy RSC Ltd., has completed drilling the second exploration well in the South Andaman Working Area (WK), Tangkulo-1 Well on Sunday, March 24 2024).

The Tangkulo-1 Exploration Well is located 166 kilometers northeast of Banda Aceh and 67 kilometers north of Lhokseumawe City, Aceh Province.

“The Tangkulo-1 well is the second exploration well drilled by Mubadala Energy in the South Andaman WK in 2024, after previously conducting the Layaran-2 Exploration Well on March 18, 2024,” Head of Program and Communication Division at the Upstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Task Force (SKK Migas), Hudi D. Suryodipuro, said in a media statement on Tuesday, March 26, 2024.

Hudi continued that the potential for oil and gas reserves in the Andaman region is still significant. According to him, exploration activities in the area can provide promising positive opportunities for the oil and gas industry.

“We continue to encourage and oversee KKKS operating in the Andaman region to realize all of their work programs in accordance with the WP&B [work, program, & budget] agreed upon for 2024,” he said. I

In the context of achieving the oil production target of 1 million barrels per day (bopd) and 12 billion standard cubic feet per day (Bscfd) of gas by 2030, exploration activities in the Andaman Region are becoming increasingly vital. “Therefore, we hope that the entire well drilling process can proceed safely, smoothly, and efficiently to yield optimal results,” he concluded.

Mubadala Energy is the gross split South Andaman contractor operator, and Layaran-1 became the first operated well by an international energy company headquartered in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The well was drilled to a depth of 4,208 meters at a water depth of 1,207 meters. A vast gas column with a thickness of over 230 meters in the oligocene sandstone reservoir was found in the well. Complete data acquisition, including wireline, coring, sampling, and production test (DST), has been carried out.

The well successfully flowed very good quality gas with a capacity of 30 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd).

Mubadala Energy CEO, Mansoor Mohammed Al Hamed, said that this discovery would bring significant commercial opportunities for the company amid the current energy transition momentum.

“This is not only a significant development for Mubadala Energy but also a major milestone for Indonesia’s energy resilience,” said Mansoor. Based on reports from Mubadala Energy (South Andaman) RSC LTD stating that the discovery of the Layaran-1 well has the potential to reach 6 Tcf of gas-in-place, this discovery could exceed the Geng North-1 well discovery, Kutai basin, and rank among the top three in the world.
