Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE) and Toyota have joined forces to develop a hydrogen ecosystem for vehicle fuel in Indonesia.

The collaboration was formalized through a joint development agreement on the development of a hydrogen-based transportation ecosystem, signed by Dannif Danusaputro, the CEO of Pertamina NRE, and Nandi Julyanto, the President Director of Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN), on Wednesday, January 17, 2024. The event was attended by Pertamina’s President Commissioner, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, and President Director, Nicke Widyawati.

Basuki expressed the need for Pertamina to take the lead in innovation, particularly in the clean energy business. He hoped that the collaboration between Pertamina and Toyota would continue to develop the hydrogen ecosystem in Indonesia.

Meanwhile, Nicke mentioned that Pertamina’s experience in the fuel sector, combined with its infrastructure capabilities, positions the company well to develop the hydrogen ecosystem for transportation. She considered the collaboration with Toyota as a significant step to accelerate the creation of this ecosystem.

On the other hand, Dannif highlighted that the groundbreaking ceremony for the hydrogen refuelling station marked a milestone in building a hydrogen ecosystem for vehicle fuel in Indonesia. He emphasized the importance of collaboration across the supply chain, mentioning that working with Toyota, which has produced fuel cell electric vehicles like the Toyota Mirai, is a strategic move.

Dannif envisioned that the introduction of hydrogen as a transportation fuel would enhance energy resilience, providing consumers with an alternative to traditional fuel sources and electricity.

The project will become Indonesia’s first integrated energy refuelling station, offering three types of fuels: traditional fossil fuels, gas, and hydrogen. The high-speed hydrogen refuelling station is designed for commercial-scale hydrogen filling, with a refill time of less than five minutes.
