Indonesia Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi promises that she will bring the Palestine issue to United Nation’s Human Right Council as Indonesia has been elected

as member of the rights council for 2024 to 2026 along with 15 other nations.

” We will continue to bring the Palestine isue to the UN Human ights Council,” Retno told a luncheon with journalists on Wednesday, December 27,2023.

Retno said the Palestine issue was discussed during in a series of events held in conjunction with the 75th Commemoration of Declaration of Human Rights in Geneva, Switzerland on December 11,2023. During her time in Geneva, the Indonesian Foreign Minister had meetings with foreign ministers from several countries and humanitarian organizations, such as the International Red Cross, the World Health Organization and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

At the meetings, the humanitarian organizations described the situation in Gaza as the worst humanitatian crisis that have not been seen in any other places in the world.

“As you know. Over 20,000 people have been killed in Gaza and based on the data, 70% of the casualties are women and children,” she explained.

Besides the UN, Retno said that she and several other foreign ministers from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, including Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, Turkiye, Nigeria and Qatar received mandates from the OIC leadership to help resolve the Gaza conflict. The foreign ministers visited the capital cities of the permanent members of UN’s Security Council − Beijing, Moscow, London, Paris and Washington DC − to raise the issue. They also visited Oslo and meet with Norwegian Foreign Ministers, Nordic and Benelux countries foreign ministers for the same purpose.

Resolution Number 2027

Retno said that in December 2023, the United Nations Security Council has adopted Resolution Number 2027 that is largely expected to bring change to the Gaza conflict.

“One thing that will make change or improvement on the field is ceasefire. So we will see how the Security Council resolution will bring improvement in Gaza” she explained.

Israel launched an offensive on Gaza since October 7, 2023 immediately after the attack by Hamas militants. Data from the Gaza Health Authority reveals that over 20,000 people have been killed following the Israeli bombardment, including 8,200 children and 6,200 women. Meanwhile, around 7 thousand people are reportedly still missing.

Israel has maintained that its offensive was a response to the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023 that killed 1,200 Israelis and took hundreds of people into hostages.
