PT Pertamina Hulu Rokan (PHR) recently discovered the presence of Sumatra Light Crude oil content in the Rokan working area (WK) in Riau and produced additional production of 1,231 barrels of oil per day (bopd).

Sumatran Light Crude (SLC) is a type of crude oil produced from fields such as Minas, Bangko, Bekasi and Kota Batak. SLC has the characteristics of a light oil with a low sulfur content.

Previously, PHR’s efforts to optimize oil production in the Rokan Block yielded positive results and the company managed to discover new oil reserves in early 2023. PHR found new oil reserves from 4 mainstay wells with very large reserves.

The four wells are the Minas, Petani, Benar, and Bekasap fields which produce 1,000 to 1,400 bopd. The four wells are located around the existing field.

Currently, the discovery of new wells is producing additional results and adding to additional production. These new findings stem from a company survey that uncovered oil potential in layers that had not previously been identified.

“Initial production of this new well reached 1,231 bopd with a drilling depth of 1,371 meters. The actual production of this well is higher than initial estimates,” said Edwil Suzandi, Head of the PHR Upstream Oil and Gas Business Division on July 10, 2023.

Edwil said that the discovery of the new well, named Sikladi-34, is located in the Sikladi Field in Riau. The finding of this well adds ten times to the previous prediction of 102 bopd.

Jaffee A. Suardin, Main Director of PHR said that these new wells will be PHR’s top priority in drilling activities.

“PHR continues to strive to obtain new wells with high production to support the achievement of national production targets,” said Edwil.

In addition to the success in the Sikladi well, the increase in oil production from the workover well in the Pinang Field resulted in production of 614 bopd on July 9, 2023. This production increased significantly from the previous 572 bopd and from the initial estimated production of 42 bopd. However, this success is extremely rare.

“There are not many workovers with oil gain above 500 bopd. Hopefully these results will continue,” he said.
