Banten is developing industrial hazardous waste management in Bojonegara district, Serang Regency. The project was established in 2021 with an investment worth IDR98.75 billion and is potentially profitable for investors.

Bojonegara district is located in Banten Province in Indonesia, with Banten’s capital in Serang. Currently, in 2021, the province has a population of 12 million while its area is 9,662.92Km2. The population is majority Muslim with a percentage of 94.62%. The province boast 4 investment opportunities and Tanjung Lesung is one of these. The province has 15 industrial regions, 2 airports, 5 ports, 38 educational facilities, 75 hotels and 88 hospitals.

On the other hand, the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) is a government institution managing investment opportunities and projects and was established in 1973 that is led by Minister Bahlil Lahadalia in 2021. The institution is in charge of implementing policy and service coordination in investing based on Indonesian regulations.

Profitable waste management

Industrial hazardous waste management is a project part of BKPM’s 47 projects. The project was established in 2021 with an investment worth IDR98.75 billion and an interest rate of return (IRR) of 23.1%, a net present value (NPV) of IDR267.36 million and a payback period of 3.36 years.

The project focuses on the management of waste in particular B3. According to the Buleleng Regency website, B3 waste is generated from domestic households such as air freshener, clothes bleach, laundry detergent, bathroom cleaner, glass/window cleaner, floor cleaner, wood polisher, oven cleaner, insect repellent, adhesive glue, hair spray and battery.

According to BKPM, an analysis of 175 companies that potentially creates waste in Banten in 2020 around 167 companies or industries potentially produce B3. From this data, the prospect of managing B3 waste is big. The project’s potential aims to establish management specifically for B3 waste.

The province of Banten expects the B3 management to be very profitable to investors. Meanwhile, the Banten Province is committed to fully supporting the investors who want to invest in the B3 management. On the other hand, the Banten provincial government had provided the land in several locations for the industrial waste management project.

Waste treatment is generally based on the principle that it does not damage the ecosystem or harm the surroundings, but it can also be processed into compost or simple fertilizer, additional animal feed, made into handicrafts as well as biogas and electricity. According to the Buleleng Regency website, B3 waste management includes storage, collection, utilization, transportation as well as the processing and stockpiling.

Risk in waste management

Waste management could deliver potentially hazardous material if improperly disposed of. In other words, waste management contains hazardous material and needs proper disposing methods.

While it contains hazardous materials it is not always sustainable. Some materials could not be recycled again and needed to be contained in a barrel and stored.

According to earthday.org, humans generate too much waste and cannot be sustainably dealt with. Wastes are not biodegradable and cannot be properly recycled. Thus, toxic waste materials such as B3 wastes fill landfills and oceans.
