Company named suspect in Cesium-137 radiation case in Banten
Minister of Environment and Forestry Hanif Faisol Nurofiq has announced that PT Peter Metal Technology (PMT) has formally been designated a suspect in the case of radioactive Cesium-137 contamination at the Modern Cikande Industrial Estate in Serang, Banten.
“Bareskrim [National Police’s Crime Investigation Agency] has named PT PMT as the suspect in the Cesium-137 incident, and the legal process is currently underway,” Hanif said during a hearing with Commission XII of the House of Representatives (DPR) on Wednesday, December 3, 2025.
He cited that contaminated materials stored at PT PMT’s internal facility have now reached 1,136.6 tons. Due to the emergency nature of the situation, he said, a detailed handling plan must be carried out by the Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (Bapeten) together with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN).
“Decontamination has been completed at 12 locations, but we are still investigating one more site where nuclear materials are suspected to be buried beneath a building foundation,” Hanif said.
The ministry also reported strict monitoring of vehicles leaving the Cikande area through radiation portal monitoring (RPM). A total of 71,000 vehicles have been scanned, with 48 found to have radionuclide contamination. Those vehicles have since undergone decontamination.
“These cases occurred during the initial phase of the incident, and no further contamination has been found in the last two to three weeks,” he said.
