Indonesia strengthens carbon trade through international cooperation
Minister of Environment, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening Indonesia’s carbon trade through international collaboration.
His remarks came during the signing of two new mutual recognition agreements (MRA) between the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, the Environmental Fund Management Agency (BPDLH), Global Carbon Council, and Plan Vivo on Tuesday, September 16, 2025. These represent Indonesia’s second and third MRAs, following an earlier partnership with Gold Standard.
“We take pride in taking this important step together to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the carbon economic value,” Hanif said on Tuesday, September 16, 2025.
He stressed that the government is serious about building a carbon market with strong integrity while creating broader opportunities for financing green development.
Indonesia has already raised its climate ambitions under its Enhanced Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), targeting a 32.89 percent emission reduction through domestic efforts and 43.20 percent with international support.
According to Hanif, achieving these goals will require substantial funding − around Rp400 trillion (US$24 billion) for the forestry sector and Rp4,000 trillion (US$240 billion) for the energy sector.
Hanif also emphasized that all carbon traded through the voluntary carbon market will remain recorded as Indonesia’s assets in the National Registry System (SRN) of the Ministry of Environment and BPDLH.
“Collaboration with various international carbon standards will serve as a crucial instrument to help achieve Indonesia’s NDC targets,” he asserted.
