Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed his deep condolences to President Prabowo Subianto over the devastating floods that struck northern Sumatra, claiming hundreds of lives and causing widespread destruction.

“Please accept my heartfelt condolences regarding the loss of life and the extensive damage caused by the floods in the northern part of Sumatra Island,” President Putin said in a written statement shared by the Russian Embassy in Indonesia on Sunday, November 30, 2025.

He added that Russia mourns together with those who have lost family members and loved ones in the disaster, while hoping that affected regions will soon recover and return to normal, safe, and prosperous living conditions.

Since Tuesday, November 25, 2025 several cities and regencies across Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra have been hit by flash floods and landslides. The disaster has cut off major transportation routes, electricity supply, and communication networks.

According to Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), as of Saturday, November 29, 2025 at least 303 people have died, 279 remain missing, and 18 others are injured across the three hardest-hit provinces.

● North Sumatra recorded the highest fatalities with 166 deaths and 133 missing.

● West Sumatra reported 90 deaths and 85 missing.

● Aceh recorded 47 deaths and 51 missing.

Relief efforts are ongoing. The Indonesian military (TNI) and national search and rescue agency (Basarnas) have deployed 11 helicopters to deliver emergency aid to isolated areas. Additionally, six naval vessels have been mobilized to support evacuation operations and transport logistics to affected coastal regions.

Authorities continue to work urgently as weather conditions remain challenging and search teams race to locate survivors still cut off by the disaster.
