Prabowo Subianto highlighted the critical role of BRICS as a key pillar of global stability during his address at the BRICS Leaders Virtual Meeting on Monday, September 8, 2025, emphasizing its emergence as significant force in the global geopolitical landscape, especially amid ongoing instability worldwide.

The virtual meeting brought together heads of state and high-level representatives from BRICS countries and other global leaders. Attendees included Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Russian President Vladimir Putin, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Crown Prince Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed of the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos, and Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.

In his speech, President Prabowo acknowledged the growing influence of BRICS, which now represents more than 55 percent of the world’s population and over 40 percent of global GDP. He underscored that the group’s collective economic power, large population, expansive markets, and abundant natural resources make it a formidable force in shaping the future of global politics and economics.

“BRICS has the largest economies, the biggest populations, and nations with vast natural resources. As such, BRICS is increasingly seen as a pillar of global power, and Indonesia fully supports the continuation of this important role,” he said.

Multilateralism and global cooperation

The President also stressed the importance of openness, coordination, and close cooperation among BRICS members in tackling global uncertainty. He called on BRICS nations to embrace their moral responsibility in creating a more equitable and balanced world order, emphasizing the need for more frequent consultations among member states.

“We must continue to strengthen our collaboration. We must consult with one another more frequently,” he emphasized. “BRICS has a moral duty to lead the way toward a fairer global order.”

Through its active participation in this virtual summit, Indonesia reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening solidarity among BRICS countries and promoting a more inclusive, fair, and sustainable international cooperation framework.

Indonesia’s involvement in BRICS also reflects its broader strategy of increasing its role in global governance and forming strategic partnerships that benefit the broader global community.

President Prabowo Subianto then shared Indonesia’s perspective on several pressing global issues, reiterating Indonesia’s full support for the initiatives generated within the BRICS forum.

“We fully support the initiatives that have been undertaken. We appreciate President Lula’s leadership, and Indonesia is committed to working more closely with all BRICS countries,” President Prabowo affirmed.

Platform for constructive dialogue

The virtual meeting provided an opportunity for leaders to exchange views on the evolving global economic landscape and the current state of the multilateral system.

Geopolitical challenges and global economic dynamics continue to affect international trade stability and growth prospects across various regions.

Indonesia’s participation underscores its commitment to engaging in constructive international dialogue, expanding its role in global governance, and fostering strategic partnerships that contribute to tangible benefits for global communities.
