Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono received a courtesy call from the British Ambassador to Indonesia, Dominic Jermey, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jakarta today, May 8, 2025.

The meeting was focused on strengthening the strategic partnership between Indonesia and the United Kingdom following then President Joko Widodo’s official visit to the UK in November last year.

During the meeting, Foreign Minister Sugiono reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to deepening the newly enhanced strategic partnership with the UK.

“We discussed cooperation across several priority areas, including economic growth, healthcare, human resource development, defense and cybersecurity, climate change, energy transition, and sustainable development. We also exchanged views on Indonesia’s application to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP),” he said.

Sugiono also outlined Indonesia’s policy direction to modernize its fishing fleet as a means to bolster food security and accelerate economic growth in the maritime sector.

In response, Ambassador Jermey expressed the UK’s readiness to support Indonesia in strengthening its maritime industry capabilities.

Beyond economic collaboration, Sugiono emphasized the importance of multilateral cooperation in addressing global challenges. He reiterated Indonesia’s firm stance in supporting a two-state solution to the Israel–Palestine conflict based on the 1967 borders, and stressed the need to uphold international law in responding to the Ukraine issue.

Sugiono also highlighted the recent Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, which is crucial for ensuring the smooth delivery of humanitarian aid and initiating the reconstruction process. He expressed hope that the UK could contribute to creating a conducive environment for Israel to comply with the ceasefire agreement.
