FM Sugiono meets Thai Ambassador, discuss strengthened bilateral relations
Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono met with Ambassador of the Kingdom of Thailand, Prapan Disyatat, at the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday, March 12, 2025 discussing measures to strengthen bilateral Indonesia-Thailand cooperation in light of the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between both nations this year.
During the meeting, Foreign Minister Sugiono welcomed the commitment of both countries to revitalize high-level bilateral mechanisms, including plans for an upcoming visit by senior Indonesian officials to Thailand.
“The planned reactivation of bilateral mechanisms aims to further enhance cooperation in various sectors, including political-security matters, economic investment, people-to-people exchanges, and development collaboration,” Sugiono said as quoted in a statement on Wednesday, March 12, 2025.
Additionally, Minister Sugiono expressed appreciation for the Thai government’s support and cooperation in repatriating Indonesian citizens who were victims of human trafficking, particularly online scams in the Thailand-Myanmar border region.
Indonesia and Thailand have maintained diplomatic relations since March 7, 1950. Thailand remains one of Indonesia’s key strategic partners in trade and investment.
In 2024, bilateral trade between the two countries reached US$17 billion, while Thailand’s investment in Indonesia for the same period amounted to US$389.7 million. Both countries continue to work closely in the region to strengthen ASEAN centrality, address the Myanmar crisis, and combat transnational crimes.
