Indonesian FM, Malaysian Ambassador push for border negotiation resolution
Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono met with Malaysian Ambassador to Indonesia, Dato’ Syed Mohamad Hasrin Tengku Hussin, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia on Tuesday, March 12, 2025 discussing bilateral key issues of progress in border negotiations, economic cooperation, ASEAN affairs, and the Palestine issue.
Foreign Minister Sugiono welcomed the ongoing negotiations on maritime and land boundaries between Indonesia and Malaysia and reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to resolving outstanding issues through diplomatic discussions.
In the economic sector, Sugiono expressed optimism regarding the future of Indonesia-Malaysia relations. He highlighted Malaysia’s significant investments in Indonesia, including cooperation between Pertamina and Petronas and joint efforts in the palm oil industry.
“Malaysia is ranked as the fourth-largest investor from Southeast Asia, with a recorded investment value of US$4.1 billion in 2024,“ Sugiono said as quoted in a statement on Wednesday, March 12, 2025.
Beyond bilateral matters, both officials discussed ASEAN-related issues. Sugiono conveyed Indonesia’s commitment to supporting Malaysia’s ASEAN chairmanship in 2025, emphasizing the importance of regional stability and cooperation.
Additionally, the two sides addressed the Palestine issue. Both Indonesia and Malaysia reaffirmed their strong commitment to advocating for a peaceful resolution, including a permanent ceasefire and the Two-State solution.
As Indonesia’s closest neighbor and an important partner, Malaysia has maintained diplomatic relations with Indonesia for 68 years, underscoring the enduring and strategic partnership between the two nations.
