Prabowo meets Japanese PM, discusses increased collaboration

Indonesian Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto paid a courtesy call on Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in Tokyo, Japan, on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, particularly discussing deeper defense cooperation between Indonesia and Japan. 

“The two countries have built a good cooperative relationship so far. We asked the Japanese government to work together to achieve a stronger relationship in the future and increase collaboration in the defense sector,” the Indonesian president elect said. 

Meanwhile, PM Kishida expressed hopes to deepen bilateral collaboration with Indonesia to promote a free and open Indo-Pacific region.

“This visit is very encouraging. Japan and Indonesia have been close friends for a long time. I want (Japan and Indonesia) to further enhance cooperation as partners who share basic values and principles,” Kishida said. 

In the bilateral meeting, the Japanese delegation included Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Hiroshi Moria, Secretary General of the National Security Secretariat (NSS) Takeo Akiba, Japanese Ambassador to Indonesia Masaki Yasushi, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs Takehiro Funakoshi, DG South Asia Ryo Nakamura and Vice Minister of Defense for International Affairs Kiyoshi Serizawa. 

Meanwhile the Indonesian delegation included Indonesian Ambassador to Japan Heri Akhmadi, Vice Chairman of the Indonesian House of Representatives’ Commission I, Chief of the Indonesian Military’s Strategic Intelligence Agency, Head of Defense Facilties at the Indonesian Defense Ministry, and the Indonesian Defense Attache in Tokyo.
