Indonesia encourages the establishment of a Global Water Fund or world water financing platform in an effort to improve adequate water and sanitation infrastructure worldwide.

Indonesian Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani Indrawati said that water is an important aspect of people’s lives, but cited that the amount of funds allocated for water quality improvement by the government of Indonesia, which is around 3.4 percent of its State Budget, is relatively small when compared to the annual investment needs in water and sanitation.

“Funds coming from the government alone will not be sufficient. Therefore, many efforts are made, starting from the local level, even to the village, to the national and world levels,” Sri Mulyani told the 10th World Water Forum High Level Panel (HLP) in Bali on Tuesday, May 21, 2024.

She said that the Indonesian government continues to strive for global funding by discussing it with stakeholders from various countries and organizations.

She said further that collaboration between the government and the private sector is needed to realize water security and proper sanitation and that the 10th World Water Forum is expected to be a platform to formulate an effective and sustainable water funding scheme.

“Many international institutions have concerns about water, such as the World Bank, ADB, African Development Bank, AIIB, European Investment Bank, and others. They must have portfolios related to water and sanitation,” she concluded.
