Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Erick Thohir recently met with Mohamed Ali Rashed Alabbar, the founder of Emaar Properties, the developer behind the world’s tallest building, Burj Khalifa, discussing about the development of Indonesia’s Special Economic Zones (KEK) and tourism.
Erick Thohir accompanied Alabbar on visits to several key Indonesian tourism destinations, including Labuan Bajo in East Nusa Tenggara, Mandalika in West Nusa Tenggara, and Bali.
“We listened to Mr. Alabbar’s insights on how Dubai was developed into a global tourism hub,” Erick said, as quoted from his Instagram account on Sunday, May 27, 2024.
During the visits, Thohir showcased various government projects to Alabbar. One notable project is the Golo Mori area in Labuan Bajo, which is being developed as an ecotourism destination emphasizing natural and sustainable tourism.
After visiting Golo Mori in Labuan Bajo, Erick and Alabbar proceeded to Mandalika, which already features an international circuit and serves as a MotoGP venue. Erick noted that the area would soon include an international standard golf course, further enhancing its appeal as a sport tourism destination.
The final stop was the Special Economic Zone (KEK) Sanur in Bali, which is projected to become a cornerstone of national tourism. Through this KEK, Erick aims to stimulate the growth of Indonesia’s tourism ecosystem and economy.
“This area will be an internationally integrated and sustainable tourism destination. Besides featuring five-star hotels and a convention center, KEK Sanur will also have international-standard healthcare facilities, including a hospital,” Erick said.
