State-owned energy company PT Pertamina is exploring cooperation opportunity on upstream oil and gas development in Latin America and Carribean region.

Pertamina’s Vice President for Corporate Communication, Fadjar Djoko Santoso, said exploration of collaboration in upstream oil and gas in Latin America and Carribean region is a commitment of Pertamina in supporting national energy resilience.

“Pertamina continues to strenghten national energy resilience by optimizing domestic upstream oil and gas and also oil and gas development abroad. To strengthen energy resilience, Pertamina has synergized with various parties,” Fadjar said as quoted on Friday, September 13, 2024.

Pertamina, Fadjar added, applies double strategy in maintaining national energy resilience, namely by continuing and strengthening the existing business as well as developing low carbon business.

He cited that Latin America and Carribean region have big oil and gas potential and there are opportunities for Pertamina to explore cooperation in develipong oil and gas working areas.

“Pertamina has experience in managing upstream oil and gas in various countries, including Venezuela, one of the countries in Latin America and Carribean region,” he said.

Fadjar added that Pertamina will focus its collaboration opportunity on exploration in Suriname, Guyana, and Brazil, which have huge potential of oil and gas.

Suriname, he said, has proven reserves of crude oil of 89 million barrel with Staatsolie, Suriname national oil company, as the main player. Guyana will be the fourth biggest oil producer in Latin America after the discovery of Stabroek block with potential reserves of 11 billion oil equivalent. Meanwhile, Brazil has production reserve of liquid oil for 28.7 years.
