Pertamina EP Zone 7, an Upstream subholding of State energy company PT Pertamina, strives to increase oil and gas production through the Akasia Bagus-Gantar Field Development Optimization Project (OPLL), Indramayu Working Area, West Java by means of Acid Gas Removal Unit (AGRU) system based on the amine system (MDEA) and Carbon Capture, Utilization & Storage (CCUS).

This project, which involves drilling of 22 development wells and construction of the SP Akasia Bagus (ABG) Production Facilities Phase 1 and Phase 2, is expected to be a milestone in the development of hydrocarbon potential in the region.

“These two measures are targeted to increase oil production by 12.71 million barrels of stock (MMSTB) and gas by 10.53 billion standard cubic feet (BSCF),” General Manager of Pertamina EP for West Java, Afwan Daroni, sai in a statement as quoted on Thursday, January 2, 2025.

This project is designed to process oil and gas with a total capacity of 9,000 barrels of liquids per day (BLPD) and 22 million standard cubic feet of gas per day (MMSCFD). To date, 12 drilling wells have been completed, so that there are a total of 26 active production wells in the Akasia Bagus Field.

Afwan added that this project also includes modernizing production facilities by implementing new technology. One of the innovations used is the AGRU system based on the MDEA, which was first implemented in the world to process gas with carbon dioxide (CO2) levels of up to 65 percent moles.

“Upgrading production facilities will also be equipped with a Gas Dehydration Unit and Thermal Oxidation (TOX), aiming to reduce CO2, H2S, and water levels to comply with gas sales specifications in the existing Gas Sales and Purchase Agreement (PJBG) in West Java,” he cited.

CCUS implementation

In addition, Pertamina EP utilizes high CO2 levels to develop gas layers from oil rims through the Carbon Capture, Utilization & Storage (CCUS) method. This initiative is in line with the company’s commitment to supporting the net zero emission target.

Existing production is currently managed using Early Production Facilities (EPF) ABG Phase 1 in accordance with approval from the Upstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Task Force (SKK Migas). The Akasia Bagus Production Facility Project Phase 1 is scheduled to go through two onstream phases: the liquid facility in February 2025 and the AGRU facility in May 2025.

“This project not only emphasizes Pertamina EP’s role as the main driver of the energy sector in Indonesia, but also serves as proof of the implementation of cutting-edge technology in supporting national energy security,” Afwan concluded.
