Indonesia’s Pertamina New and Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE) and Africa’s conglomerate Guma Group signed a joint study agreement (JSA) on potential development of gas to power in South Africa.
The signing of the JSA was held on the sidelines of the Indonesia-Africa Forum (IAF) in Bali on Monday, September 2, 2024 by Chief Executive Officer of Pertamina NRE, Jhon Anis, and Executive Chairman of Guma, Robert Gumede, and were witnessed by Jodi Mahardi, Deputy for Maritime and Energy Sector at the Coordinating Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Investment and President Director of PERTAMINA Nicke Widyawati.
The cooperation aims to deepen and conduct joint studies in an effort to develop gas to power in South Africa. This step is also part of Pertamina NRE’s commitment to expand globally, especially in the field of gas to power as an initial medium for energy transition and efforts to continue to reduce the rate of carbon emissions.
“I am pleased to be here and witness the collaboration between Pertamina NRE and Guma. I hope this cooperation will continue to concrete actions that will have positive impact on both parties,” Jodi said in his speech.
This collaboration is considerably a concrete form of “south-south” cooperation, which is the spirit of the Indonesia – Africa Forum initiated by the Indonesian government, starting with the state visit of the President of the Republic of Indonesia to Africa in August 2023 to explore the potential for collaboration between Indonesia and Africa. Afterwards, on November 17, 2023, Pertamina signed its first MoU with Guma.
The success in completing and operating the mega project of the Java-1 Steam Gas Power Plant (PLTGU) is a major capital of Pertamina NRE that it is trusted by global partners to carry out similar technology development. PLTGU Jawa-1 is even the largest steam, gas power plant in Southeast Asia today with the latest combine cycle technology.
“With abundance of experience, especially the success at Jawa-1, Pertamina NRE is the right partner for Guma to develop a clean energy ecosystem in South Africa. At the same time, this is Pertamina NRE’s journey to support the mission of world countries to achieve net zero emissions,” John Anis said.
Vice President for Corporate Communication of PT Pertamina, Fadjar Djoko Santoso, said that Pertamina encourages subholding expansion in the international market.
“Establishing partnerships will encourage the improvement of Pertamina NRE’s expertise and experience in the clean energy industry on a global scale,” Fadjar said.
