The North Sumatra Provincial Prosecutors’ Office has detained a new suspect, identified as Jhon Chandra (JC), in connection with a corruption case involving the construction project at the Railink Station of the Kualanamu International Airport that has allegedly caused Rp5.77 billion (US$370,000) in State losses.
JC, the Director of CV Bangun Restu Bersama, was arrested after the Special Crimes Investigation Team (Pidsus) of the North Sumatra Prosecutors’ Office gathered sufficient evidence.
According to authorities, JC’s role in the project − subcontracted by PT Angkasa Pura Propertindo − did not meet the specified construction standards, leading to financial losses.
“We have detained JC after he was declared a suspect. This is based on the substantial evidence we have collected,” Adre Wanda Ginting, Spokesman of the North Sumatra Prosecutors’ Office, said in Medan on Wednesday, October 9, 2024.
He added that JC would be held for 20 days at Medan Prison.
The case, stemming from a 2019 project worth Rp39.25 billion, initially saw PT Angkasa Pura Propertindo subcontract parts of the construction to JC.
However, the work was found to be non-compliant with the project’s technical specifications. An independent auditor later determined the financial impact of the misconduct, amounting to Rp5.77 billion.
JC is the latest individual to be detained in the ongoing investigation. Four others, including high-ranking officials from State airport operator PT Angkasa Pura II, have been arrested: BI, Executive General Manager; YF, Senior Manager of Airport Maintenance; AA, Manager of Infrastructure; and RAH, Director of PT Inochi Konsultan.
These individuals have been charged under Indonesia’s Anti-Corruption Law (Law No. 31/1999, amended by Law No. 20/2001), for abuse of authority, which resulted in significant financial losses to the state.
“The suspects are facing charges under Article 2 and Article 3, in conjunction with Article 18 of the Anti-Corruption Law,” Ginting said.
