Indonesia gets OECD membership accession roadmap, strengthened global position

Indonesia secured the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Membership Accession Roadmap at the OECD Ministerial Level Meeting in Paris, France, on Thursday, May 2, 2024.

Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Airlangga Hartarto, who represented Indonesia in the event, said that the submission of the road map is one of the processes in Indonesia’s accession to join the OECD. OECD represents 80 percent of the world’s trade and investment.

“Through membership in the OECD, it is believed that Indonesia can strengthen its position in global geopolitics,” Airlangga said.

Beides Indonesia, several other countries have also been declared as candidates for accession, including Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Croatia, Peru and Romania.

Kao Kim Hourn, Secretary General of ASEAN, congratulates to Indonesia for gaining accession to OECD membership.

“This success is also felt by all ASEAN members. We hope that other ASEAN countries will also follow Indonesia’s steps, so that they can increase the representation of ASEAN countries in the OECD,” he said.

Meanwhile, Yoko Kamikawa, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan, expressed hope that Indonesia would strengthen the collaboration axis of the OECD with countries in Southeast Asia (ASEAN).

Airlangga said that Japan had an agenda of strengthening collaboration between the OECD and countries in Southeast Asia, with Indonesia as the main axis.

In the Paris meeting. Airlangga conveyed a number of crucial issues that are currently on Indonesia’s big agenda, namely sustainable development, responsible use of artificial intelligence, and free flow of data with trust.
