Danone Specialized Nutrition (SN) Indonesia on Friday, October 18, 2024, set up cooperation with PT Anugerah Pharmindo Lestari (APL) and PT Ray Hikmah Jaya (RHJ) in food waste management by reusing powdered milk that is not absorbed by the market.

The initiative aims to process unsold powdered milk into animal feed, as an alternative to the combustion process which can produce carbon emissions. This program is expected to prevent food waste and reduce the carbon footprint in the supply chain, with a target of reusing up to 500 kilograms of powdered milk per day. This measure is also expected to reduce 452 kilograms of food waste daily.

Chief Executive Officer of Danone SN Indonesia, Lee Meng Thoong, said this collaboration is in line with the company’s sustainability strategy, Danone Impact Journey (DIJ), which aims to reduce food waste by 50percent by 2030.

“Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. This collaboration is to reduce environmental impact by reusing products that are not absorbed by the market,” Lee said.

In addition to reducing the carbon footprint, processing powdered milk into animal feed offers additional benefits by utilizing the protein, vitamin, and mineral content in the powdered milk. This provides added value for farmers while improving the health and growth of livestock that consume it.

APL President Director, Christophe Piganiol, emphasized that this collaboration is part of the company’s sustainability vision to create a healthier future for the community. “By working together, we are not only reducing the carbon footprint but also building more sustainable partnerships in the business ecosystem,” Piganiol said.

This collaboration program is in line with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) programs, such as Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG No. 12), Climate Action (SDG No. 13), and Partnerships to Achieve the Goals (SDG No. 17).

This signing is also considered an important step in showing that environmentally responsible businesses can go hand in hand with commercial success.

Director of PT Ray Hikmah Jaya, Adi Susanto, said that this program will be a new standard in responsible waste management in Indonesia. “We hope that this collaboration can be an example for other companies to care more about sustainability issues and food waste,” said Adi.
