A law professor at Jenderal Soedirman University (Unsoed) suspects that the disinformation attacks directed at Attorney General ST Burhanuddin are an attempt by certain groups to undermine the efforts of the Attorney General’s Office in handling corruption cases in Indonesia.
Prof. Hibnu Nugroho believes that the Attorney General’s Office has been intensively tackling major corruption cases in sectors such as mining, gold, sugar, and salt, which may have triggered these attacks.
“This seems to be a retaliatory move by corrupt individuals who feel threatened by the Attorney General’s Office’s success in combating corruption,” Hibnu said in Purwokerto, Central Java, on Tuesday, October 3, 2024.
He emphasized that under Burhanuddin’s leadership, the Attorney General’s Office has operated cleanly and efficiently, earning the highest level of trust as a law enforcement institution in Indonesia.
“The management of the Attorney General is highly optimal, and the Attorney General’s Office is recognized for its credible law enforcement,” he added.
Hibnu also noted that President Joko Widodo has praised the Attorney General’s Office as a trustworthy institution in the fight against corruption.
This credibility, according to him, has made the Attorney General’s Office a target for attacks by those affected by its anti-corruption initiatives.
Despite ongoing personal attacks against the Attorney General, Hibnu hopes the office remains focused on its primary mission of eradicating corruption in Indonesia.
“The Attorney General’s Office must stay focused and not be swayed by personal issues. Indonesia must be free from corruption,” he stressed.
He further warned that if these attacks amount to defamation, legal actions can be taken against those responsible.
“If it’s defamation, there will be legal consequences. However, the Attorney General’s Office must wisely allocate its resources to address more critical matters,” he concluded.
