Thai conglomerate Siam Cement Group (SCG) has unveiled strategic collaborative projects aimed at fostering an inclusive and sustainable green economy in Indonesia.
The initiatives are part of SCG’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions (NZE) and were highlighted during the SCG ESG Symposium 2024 held in Jakarta on Tuesday, November 19, 2024.
The projects include the development of a green smart city in Indonesia’s new capital, Ibu Kota Nusantara (IKN), and the establishment of Kadin Net Zero Hub.
Key projects in Indonesia:
1. Smart forest city in IKN
As Indonesia aspires to become a developed nation, its new capital Nusantara (IKN) is designed to be a sustainable smart forest city.
The city will focus on optimizing land use, conserving green areas, and enhancing energy efficiency, aiming for 100 percent net-zero emissions by 2045.
“The low-carbon approach implemented in Saraburi (project in Thailand) can serve as a valuable reference for Indonesia as it develops IKN, prioritizing sustainability and the smart forest city concept,” Nuttavut Intarode, SCG’s Sustainable Development Director, said on Tuesday, December 17, 2024.
2. Kadin net zero hub
The Kadin Net Zero Hub, initiated by the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), facilitates the private sector, including SMEs, in transitioning to a low-carbon economy.
The hub provides resources such as greenhouse gas (GHG) management training and supports companies in adopting Science-Based Targets initiatives (SBTi).
So far, over 80 companies have joined the initiative, with 40 participating in GHG Bootcamps and six committing to SBTi.
The hub collaborates with regional organizations like the ASEAN Net Zero Hub to share best practices and technologies across member nations.
Warit Jintanawan, SCG’s Country Director for Indonesia, emphasized the importance of partnerships in achieving inclusive green development.
“Collaboration between public, private, and civil sectors ensures economic growth is both environmentally friendly and beneficial for all societal levels,” he said.
Greener future
With organizations like Kadin supporting SMEs and providing access to technology and solutions for decarbonization, Indonesia is positioned to lead in green economy initiatives.
“Cross-sector collaboration is the key to accelerating inclusive and sustainable green development, through ongoing partnerships, Indonesia is moving closer to a greener and more sustainable future,” Jintanawan concluded.
