President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has expressed his confidence that Indonesia Indonesia will emerge as one of the world’s new economic powers.

“It is predicted that there will three new economic powers emerging in Asia. According to estimates, India, China, and Indonesia are the three economic superpowers. All of the three are in Asia,” the president said while addressing the opening of the BNI Investor Daily Summit 2024 held in Jakarta on Tuesday, October 8, 2024.

He, however, stressed the importance for Indonesia to be able to overcome a number of obstacles if it is to become an economic giant. He cited the world economic downturn, uncertainty and crises that have struck several nations.

“Also the increase in geopolitical tensions, while the Ukrainian war has not ended, the Israel-Palestine war has entered a new phase, expanding to Israel-Lebanon and  Iran-Israel, thus making the world economy is increasingly unclear,” Jokowi said.

The president asked everyone to remain optimistic on the country’s economy. He said that as long as the country’s economic growth is above five percent and the inflation rate can be kept under control at around 2-3 percent.

“I received the consumer confidence data this morning. They are at 124.4, which is an optimistic level. Furthermore, if we compare the third quarter of 2024 at 234.8 with the third quarter of 2023 at 145.8, we can see that our spending index is heading upward, indicating a significant year-over-year rise,” he continued.

In addition, the president also said that the gross domestic product (GDP) per capita currently reaches US$5,060. He expressed hope that under the next government, Indonesia can accelerate its transformation into a developed country through strong economic growth.

“As long as our economic growth can be above 5 percent, or as stated by pak Prabowo that it can reach the target of 8 percent, it will accelerate our country’s aspiration to become a developed country,” the president concluded.
