Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, Hadi Tjahjanto, has revealed that the Ministry of Communication and Informatics and the National Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN) are expected to restore the Second Temporary National Data Center (PDNS 2) this month.

He said that the government has backed up PDNS 2 with a cold site, which will be upgraded to a hot site in Batam, Riau Islands province. A hot site provides an alternative physical location for backup data usage.

The minister emphasized the implementation of multiple layers of data protection at PDNS 2, using cloud technology monitored directly by BSSN. This ensures that statistical data from various agencies can be backed up in the cloud, preventing the primary data center from becoming overloaded.

“Each data center owner also has their own backup, so there are at least three to four layers of backup, and we will also provide a backup with the cloud,” Hadi told a media conference in Jakarta on Monday, July 1, 2024.

He said further that with the deployment of the hot site as a backup data provider, all ministry and agency websites with data stored in PDNS 2 will expectedly resume operations.

The government, through BSSN and the Ministry of Communication and Informatics, identified on June 24, 2024 that 211 agencies were affected by the cyber attack on PDNS 2.

By Tuesday, June 25, 2024, the number of affected agencies had risen to 282. However, by Wednesday, June 26, 2024, 44 agencies were ready to begin data recovery, while the rest were still in the process. Of these, five agencies had already resumed services to the public after migrating their data.

Minister of Communication and Informatics, Budi Arie Setiadi, and BSSN Chief Hinsa Siburian briefed Commission I of the House of Representatives on the cyber attack on PDNS 2 on June 27, 2024. Budi Arie said that there were no indications of data breaches resulting from the cyber attack on PDNS 2 in Surabaya.

Budi added that efforts to restore PDNS 2 are ongoing. Contrary to Minister Hadi’s timeline, the Ministry of Communication and Informatics aims for full recovery of PDNS 2 by mid-August 2024.
