Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Arifin Tasrif recently signed the 2024-2025 Joint Work Program (JWP) alongside Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA) Fatih Birol for the support of the acceleration of energy transistion in Indonesia and the achievement of Net Zero Emission (NZE) targets. This signing took place amidst Arifin’s visits for the World Energy Congress (WEC) in Rotterdam and the IEA Global Summit on People-Centerd Clean Energy Transitions in Paris.

Arifin highlighted the longstanding collaboration between Indonesia and the IEA since 2006, with Indonesia formally joining as an IEA member in 2015. The 2024-2025 JWP marks the sixth agreement of its kind.

“Today’s signing of JWP is the sixth, aimed at accelerating Indonesia’s energy transition and NZE targets. Indonesia has been committed to achieving NZE goals. We hope the IEA continues its support, as it did two years ago,” Arifin said as quoted from the ESDM website on Friday, April 26, 2024.

During this JWP period, the Ministry of ESDM will prioritize cooperation in accurate energy data and statistics, which will be instrumental in policy analysis and development with capacity building support.

“Throughout this collaboration period, the Ministry of ESDM will prioritize the development of systems and applications, data and information, capacity building, and jointly agreed research with the IEA,” Arifin said.

Some of the new elements within the scope of the 2024-2025 JWP include IEA support for the development of the national electricity database, Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)/Carbon Capture, Utilization and Strage (CCUS), studies in bioenergy and energy efficiency, as well as understanding Indonesia’s methane emission conditions based on the Global Methane Tracker.
