Justin Trudeau, the Canadian Prime Minister has announced significant investments in Indonesia’s infrastructure through projects in Nusa Tenggara Timur and Maluku.

These investments, funded by Canada’s government-owned financial institution, FinDev Canada, are focused on critical infrastructure development, particularly in clean water supply.

Trudeau emphasized that these infrastructure projects will provide reliable access to clean drinking water for two million people.

“The project will help provide clean and reliable drinking water for two million people,” stated Trudeau on September 6, 2023.

Electrifying communities with renewable energy

In addition to clean water initiatives, Trudeau revealed another project aimed at connecting two million people to the electricity grid, though he did not specify the project’s location.

This electrification effort will also integrate solar power generation, resulting in a 20% reduction in energy costs for the connected communities.

Trudeau stressed that these projects are made possible through Canadian financing, with a total investment of US$ 400 million for projects in Indonesia.

He highlighted that these initiatives address climate change mitigation while fostering economic growth.

“In other words, we are making communities safer while creating jobs and prosperity,” he added.

Trudeau reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to continued investments in sustainable infrastructure, powered by FinDev Canada’s US$ 750 million fund.

Canada’s commitment to Indo-Pacific development

In May 2023, Trudeau announced a partnership with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to support sustainability initiatives across various regions.

“This week, we announced that FinDev will open a new office here in the Indo-Pacific. This initiative will support high-quality, sustainable infrastructure,” Trudeau said.

These investments reflect Canada’s commitment to supporting clean and sustainable infrastructure development in the region.
