President Prabowo Subianto called for the Indonesian Military (TNI) to end the long-standing tradition of seniority-based promotions and embrace a meritocratic system to ensure the emergence of professional leaders capable of meeting increasingly complex defense challenges.

Addressing the TNI’s 80th anniversary commemoration at the National Monument (Monas) compound in Central Jakarta on Sunday, October 5, 2025, Prabowo underscored that future military leadership must be grounded in performance, competence, and dedication rather than rank or seniority.

“Leadership selection should no longer consider seniority. What matters most are achievement, service, and love for the nation,” Prabowo said in his keynote address as the ceremony’s inspector.

He added that, in a world marked by geopolitical uncertainty and rapid technological advancement, the TNI must continue to modernize its mindset, adapt to new technologies including artificial intelligence and maintain a high level of professionalism.

“There is no place for unprofessional leaders. Every soldier deserves the best leadership,” he emphasized.

Prabowo reminded the armed forces of their historical roots as “the child of the people,” forged during the nation’s struggle for independence. He praised the TNI’s consistent role in defending the country during critical moments.

“On behalf of the state, the nation, and the government, I express my highest appreciation and gratitude to all members of the TNI. TNI has always stood firm in times of crisis and prioritized national interest above all else,” he said.

However, Prabowo also warned that safeguarding Indonesia’s sovereignty in the current era demands vigilance against threats not only from military aggression but also from economic exploitation of natural resources.

“There are always those who want to control our natural wealth through various means from smuggling to subtle invasions. TNI must work with law enforcement institutions and local governments to protect our resources,” he said.

Military parade and aerial displays

Prior to the official ceremony, the ceremony audience was treated with spectacular performances by all branches of the TNI. Army paratroopers descended from the sky carrying the national flag and the five symbols of the armed forces, while the Navy’s Sea Eagle fly team performed air maneuvers simulating maritime defense operations.

The Air Force’s Jupiter Aerobatic Team also took to the skies, painting colorful trails across Jakarta’s morning sky with high-speed formations.

Prabowo arrived at Monas in the presidential Maung Garuda vehicle, escorted by cavalry units. Along the route from the Presidential Palace, he saluted soldiers and civilians lining the streets.

Upon arrival, he inspected the troops, accompanied by Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto, and ceremony commander Lieutenant General Bambang Trisnohadi.

As he passed each unit, Prabowo greeted them with a consistent message: “Thank you for your service.”

The ceremony was attended by Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, TNi Chief, respectively chiefs of the Army, Navy, and Air Force General Maruli Simanjuntak, Admiral Muhammad Ali, and Air Chief Marshal Tonny Harjono, as well as National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo.

Also present were former president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, former vice presidents Try Sutrisno, Jusuf Kalla, and Boediono, alongside senior cabinet ministers from the current administration.

In closing, Prabowo reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening the TNI as a modern and people-oriented defense force.

“With professionalism, technological mastery, and unwavering dedication, the TNI will remain the guardian of our sovereignty and the pride of the Indonesian people,” he said.
