SKK Migas reports 999 Million Barrels of Oil Equivalent discovery
Indonesia’s upstream oil and gas sector has recorded a major breakthrough with the discovery of 999 million barrels of oil equivalent (MMBOE), according to the The Upstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Task Force (SKK Migas).
SKK Migas head Djoko Siswanto said the finding was the result of intensified exploration activities supported by the government. As of August, 18 exploration wells had been drilled, against a target of 46 wells in 2025.
“For exploration drilling, there were 25 wells in 2024, while this year’s target is 46 wells. To date, 18 wells have been completed, and by year-end we expect 43,” Djoko said during a hearing with House of Representatives (DPR) Commission XII on Tuesday, Sepember 23, 2025.
He noted that 20 exploration structures had received approval status, yielding around 999 MMBOE in combined oil and gas resources.
Of the discoveries, four structures have immediately advanced to the put on production (POP) phase, contributing an estimated 63 million barrels of oil and 19.8 billion cubic feet (BCF) of gas. These include the Padang Pancuran field, projected to deliver 400 barrels of oil per day (BOPD) by the fourth quarter of 2025; West Kalabu (100 BOPD, Q4 2025); Chen 2, DIP (200 BOPD, Q4 2025); and Sangata 2 (100 BOPD, Q4 2025).
Meanwhile, four additional structures remain under evaluation for potential POP, with reserves estimated at 15 million barrels of oil and 233 BCF of gas. These include the EPN, Duyung, Northwest Wilela, and SAS-2 fields.
“These new sources will help raise national oil production, which we expect could reach 605,000 BOPD,” Djoko said.
