Top RI-Germany diplomats meet ahead of President Prabowo’s Berlin visit
Indonesia and Germany reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation as Foreign Minister Sugiono hosted German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul in Jakarta on Wednesday, August 20, 2025.
“The meeting marked Wadephul’s first visit to Asia since assuming office in May 2025, underscoring the significance of Indonesia as a key partner for Germany,” the Indonesian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Thursday, August 21, 2025.
During the talks, both ministers highlighted their intention to accelerate the implementation of the Indonesia–EU Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) to expand trade and investment opportunities.
Sugiono also welcomed the invitation from German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier for Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto to undertake a state visit to Berlin in the second half of 2025.
The discussions covered a broad range of priorities, including renewable energy, artificial intelligence, infrastructure, and food security. Sugiono invited Germany to collaborate through Indonesia’s investment management agency Danantara to boost investment in these sectors.
On labor cooperation, both sides welcomed the deployment of Indonesian healthcare workers to Germany and agreed to expand opportunities in the hospitality sector. Berlin pledged support for Indonesian workers through language training programs.
Energy transition was another key topic, with Indonesia acknowledging Germany’s role as co-lead of the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP). Both countries are committed to enhancing collaboration on clean energy and encouraging private sector participation in green investments.
Food security featured prominently, with Indonesia inviting Germany to support its Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) Program through sustainable agriculture, livestock development, and solar-powered cold storage technology.
Both ministers also stressed the importance of people-to-people contact, particularly through visa facilitation for students, tourists, diplomats, and service passport holders.
On global issues, Indonesia reiterated the urgent need for international unity to end the humanitarian crisis in Palestine and welcomed recent recognition of Palestinian statehood by major powers.
Foreign Minister Wadephul described Indonesia as an increasingly vital partner for Germany and the European Union, citing its role as the world’s third-largest democracy and a rapidly growing economy.
Since establishing diplomatic ties on June 25, 1952, Germany has been one of Indonesia’s key partners in Europe. Wednesday’s meeting laid crucial groundwork for President Prabowo’s upcoming state visit to Berlin and reinforced the strategic partnership between the two nations.
