FM reiterates condemnation against Israel’s strike on Iran, assures evacuation of citizens
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sugiono, has renewed condemnation against Israeli strikes on Iran, describing them as a violation of international law and a threat to global security.
The attacks, which reportedly targeted Iran’s nuclear development facilities, have drawn sharp criticism from Jakarta for breaching both sovereignty and international conventions on warfare.
“The Israeli attack is not only a breach of Iran’s territorial sovereignty but also endangers international peace and security,” Sugiono told a hearing with Defense and Foreign Affairs Commission I of the House of Representatives on Monday, June 30, 2024.
“Nuclear installations are explicitly protected under international law and must not be designated as military targets,” he added.
Reaffirming Indonesia's long-standing foreign policy, Sugiono said that the government opposes all forms of occupation and unlawful aggression. “We firmly reject any act that violates the sovereignty of a nation. What Israel has done cannot be justified under any international legal framework,” he emphasized.
Citizens evacuation
Amid rising tensions in the Middle East, Sugiono also confirmed that Indonesia has evacuated 97 of its citizens from Iran and 26 others from Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and Arab regions. The operations were carried out in coordination with the Indonesian embassies in Tehran and Amman, with Azerbaijan serving as a key transit point.
“There are still plans in place to continue evacuations in the coming days,” he said, noting that 386 Indonesian nationals are currently registered as residing in Iran. While some have opted to remain, their conditions are being closely monitored.
As for Indonesian citizens in Israel and the Palestinian territories, the government has identified 167 individuals, some of whom have also chosen not to relocate at this time. “We continue to monitor their safety, especially with the fragile ceasefire currently in effect,” he added.
To bolster its readiness, the Foreign Ministry has established a Crisis Response Team, prepared to act swiftly should the conflict escalate further and necessitate a wider evacuation. “This task force is on standby to manage emergency situations that may arise in the affected regions,” Sugiono said.
