Energy company PT Medco Energi Internasional (MedcoEnergi) has announced the commencement of first oil lifting from the Forel oil and gas field located in the South Natuna Sea Block B, Riau Islands Province, marking a new milestone in Indonesia's upstream energy sector.

The field, now producing 10,000 barrels of oil per day (BOPD), is supported by the Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel Marlin Natuna.

“This first oil lifting is a testament to the strong synergy between the Government, The Upstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Task Force (SKK Migas), and the MedcoEnergi team,” Ronald Gunawan, Director & Chief Operating Officer at MedcoEnergi, said as quoted in a statement on Monday, June 16, 2025.

The Forel project was officially inaugurated on May 16, 2025, in a hybrid ceremony officiated by President Prabowo Subianto. The event highlighted not only Indonesia’s ongoing commitment to energy security but also showcased national engineering capabilities, as Marlin Natuna represents the country’s first tanker-to-FPSO conversion fully executed by local engineers.

The Marlin Natuna FPSO stands as a symbol of domestic innovation in offshore infrastructure development. By leveraging in-country expertise, MedcoEnergi is contributing to Indonesia’s long-term goal of bolstering local content in the energy industry.

In line with its commitment to health, safety, environment, and operational excellence (HSE), the Forel project was executed under stringent safety protocols. The company reiterated its continued efforts to uphold international best practices while advancing Indonesia’s energy production targets.

MedcoEnergi’s success with the Forel field further strengthens its position as a leading integrated energy company in Southeast Asia, with operations spanning oil and gas, power generation, and renewable energy.
