President tells oil and gas regulators to simplify rules
President Prabowo Subianto has issued a stern warning to officials overseeing Indonesia’s oil and gas sector, indicating that those who fail to simplify regulations will be removed from office.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 49th Annual Convention and Exhibition of the Indonesian Petroleum Association (IPA) in ICE BSD, Tangerang, Banten on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, Prabowo emphasized the urgent need for regulatory reform to unlock Indonesia’s untapped energy potential.
“I urge regulatory bodies to simplify the regulations. I repeat, simplify the regulations,” the President said firmly in front of industry leaders and stakeholders.
He cited reports indicating that dozens of oil and gas blocks across the country remain undeveloped, presenting significant opportunities for large-scale investment. However, he stressed that excessive bureaucracy has often hindered progress in the sector.
“Indonesia is very good at creating regulations, even difficult ones. But now, I want the difficult things to be solved quickly,” Prbowo said.
“Any officials who refuse to simplify the rules. I will replace them, I will remove them.”
The President also underscored the need to shift the bureaucratic culture toward efficiency and pragmatism, aligning with the country’s broader economic goals.
His remarks come amid efforts to attract greater foreign investment and accelerate development in Indonesia’s energy sector, which remains a crucial pillar of national economic growth.
“The world is changing. Those who are slow, lazy, or stuck in outdated mindsets must step aside. We will sideline those who do not perform,” Prabowo said.
