Amazon's low earth orbit (LEO) project, Amazon Kuiper, plans to build six gateway stations in Indonesia with an initial investment of US$20 million (Rp328 billion), a move seen as a competitor to Starlink.

LEO is a satellite that orbits at an altitude of around 500 to 1,200 kilometers (km) above the earth's surface, referring to the Telkomsat page, with an orbital period of 90 minutes.

Through the proximity of satellites to the earth, it is possible to use them for science, imaging and low-latency communications. One of the companies that provides this service in Indonesia is Starlink.

The investment, valid for three to five years after launch, is expected to increase to US$90 million by 2035. Amazon Kuiper has shown interest to expand infrastructure and accelerate internet access in various regions.

Amazon Kuiper has also applied for operational permits in Indonesia, including telecommunications licenses and satellite leasing rights, in accordance with the latest regulations that allow foreign companies to operate with a Business Identification Number (NIB).

"We understand that connectivity is still a challenge in many remote areas. Therefore, we want to work with the government and local partners to provide wider internet access for the people of Indonesia," Global Head of Licensing and International Regulatory Affairs Amazon Project Kuiper, Gonzalo de Dios, said on Monday, March 17, 2025.

Minister of Communication and Digital Application, Meutya V. Hafid, said that satellite technology plays an important role in overcoming the digital divide, especially in remote areas.

She cited that this technology can support the development of the national digital ecosystem, including empowering Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and improving e-government, e-health and e-education services.

"We want to ensure that every citizen, regardless of location, has equal access to digital technology. With the support of investment and innovation from the private sector, we can accelerate digital transformation and create greater opportunities for the community," Meutya said.

The Ministry of Communication and Digital Application said it will continue to facilitate the licensing process and necessary discussions to ensure the smooth running of the Amazon Kuiper project.
