Indonesian furniture industry gears up for global competition
The Ministry of Industry is optimistic that the Indonesian furniture industry will be able to increase their productivity and ready to meet the needs of both domestic and global markets.
"With maximum efforts from all industry players and support from stakeholders, I am optimistic that we can increase the productivity of the furniture industry, expand exports, and meet the needs of the domestic market," Deputy Minister of Industry, Faisol Riza, said while addressing the opening of Indonesia International Furniture Expo (IFEX) 2025 in Jakarta on Wednesday, March 6, 2025.
Based on Expert Market Research data, the value of the global furniture market in 2024 was recorded at US$660 billion and is expected to continue to grow by 4.9 percent in the 2025–2034 period.
In his remarks, Faisol also emphasized the importance of innovation in design, the use of environmentally friendly raw materials, and the application of more efficient technology to face global competition.
The Ministry of Industry has prepared various strategic steps to support the growth of this industry, including ensuring the availability of raw materials and skilled labor, expanding the market, strengthening market reference research, and increasing productivity and product quality.
Chairman of the Indonesian Furniture and Craft Industry Association (HIMKI), Abdul Sobur, emphasized that the furniture and craft industry is a strategic sector that is not only labor-intensive but also creative-based. He hopes that the government can provide more flexible regulatory support to accelerate the growth of the industry.
"We hope that regulations such as the Timber Legality Verification System (SVLK) will only be implemented upstream. This is enough to show the furniture industry's commitment to environmental sustainability," Sobur said.
Although the global economic conditions are still slowing down due to geopolitical changes, Sobur remains optimistic that the Indonesian furniture industry will continue to grow. Until November 2024, exports of furniture and craft products reached US$2.37 billion, up from US$2.22 billion the previous year.
Magnet for international buyers
IFEX, which is entering its 10th decade this year, has become one of the largest furniture exhibitions in Asia and part of the Asia Furniture Show Circle. This exhibition is an important event to promote Indonesian furniture products to the international market, including to countries with high growth potential.
This year, IFEX is targeting 14 thousand visitors from more than 100 countries. The presence of international buyers is expected to encourage increased exports and contribute to national economic growth.
"HIMKI is optimistic that IFEX will continue to be the main platform in promoting the Indonesian furniture industry and provide a positive impact on the national economy," Sobur said.
