TNI confirms killing of gold miners by Papua armed separatist group
The Indonesian Military (TNI) headquarters has confirmed that several civilians working as gold miners were killed by an armed separatist group affiliated with the Free Papua Organization (OPM) in the Suntamon District, Yahukimo Regency, Papua Mountains Province, on April 8, 2025.
Armed separatist group claims execution of 11 Indonesian gold miners in Papua
The West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB) has claimed responsibility for the execution of 11 illegal gold miners in Yahukimo, Papua, while alleging the casualties as soldiers disguising themselves as gold miners in a mission to infiltrate their operational areas.
House launches special autonomy law for Papua
The House of Representatives (DPR) passed Law No. 21/2001 on Special Autonomy for Papua in November 2001. The law - comprising of 27 chapters and 29 articles - was deemed as a strategic shift for the government. During former authoritarian Soeharto's New Order, the government applied an iron fist and security approach against Papuans and their demand for independence.
West Papua develops two special economic zones
By 2030, the West Papua province will establish two economic zones, namely Bintuni Bay Industrial Zone and Sorong Special Economic Zone.
