Indonesia and UN partner to strengthen financial health amid rising digital fraud threats
Indonesia’s Financial Services Authority (OJK) has announced strong support for a new financial health initiative led by Queen Máxima of the Netherlands ‒ the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Advocate for Financial Health (UNSGSA) ‒ as the country confronts a surge in digital financial scams.
Addressing the National Financial Health Event in Jakarta on Thursday, November 27, 2025, OJK Chairman Mahendra Siregar said the program builds on the country’s progress in financial inclusion, aiming to ensure that access to financial services results in real improvements in household well-being.
“We believe this approach is very suitable for Indonesia’s needs,” Mahendra said. “We are ready to work with the UNSGSA and bring more partners to advance financial well-being for all Indonesians.”
Queen Máxima stressed that financial inclusion alone ‒ including having a bank account ‒ is only a starting point.
“After everyone has access, we must help them use it to improve their lives ‒ managing daily finances, budgeting, obtaining the right credit, or saving for education,” she said.
She added that strengthening family resilience through tools like insurance and emergency funds can support national economic stability and long-term growth.
Queen Máxima also outlined key actions going forward:
- Shift financial literacy toward real financial health, ensuring products match people’s needs;
- Improve consumer protection through responsible product innovation;
- Make financial health part of business strategy, not just corporate social responsibility.
She noted that healthy customers ultimately benefit banks and fintechs as well.
Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Airlangga Hartarto, said poor financial health can have broad economic consequences.
“When financial health declines, families reduce consumption, deplete savings, and fall into expensive debt. This affects stability, productivity, and national development goals toward 2045,” Airlangga said.
