KPK launches investigation into Jakarta–Bandung high-speed rail project
The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has begun investigating alleged irregularities in the Jakarta–Bandung high-speed rail project, known as Whoosh, said Acting Deputy for Enforcement and Execution Asep Guntur Rahayu in Jakarta on Monday, October 27, 2025.
“The case has entered the investigation stage,” Asep said, as quoted by state news agency Antara, on Monday, October 27, 2025. However, he did not provide further details regarding the timeline or individuals questioned in connection with the case.
The controversy surrounding the Whoosh project resurfaced following a public exchange of statements between the KPK and former Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Mahfud MD.
Mahfud declared that he was ready to be summoned by the KPK to provide information regarding the project. His comments came in response to the KPK’s earlier statement urging him to formally report any evidence of budget inflation or mark-up within the project.
“If I’m summoned, I will come. But if they ask me to file a report, what’s the point? That would be a waste of time,” Mahfud said in Yogyakarta on Sunday, October 26, 2025.
Mahfud added that the KPK had already been aware of potential budget mark-ups in the Whoosh project before he made his statements public. Therefore, he urged the agency to summon individuals who possess direct data and documentation related to the project. He also expressed surprise that the KPK had asked him to submit a report, noting that under criminal law, law enforcement authorities are obligated to initiate an investigation once credible information on a potential crime is available.
KPK spokesperson Budi Prasetyo responded by emphasizing that the agency can initiate cases not only through public complaints but also from its own preliminary findings.
“KPK remains open to anyone who has valid initial information or data about suspected corruption. Please convey it to us − whether it becomes a lead or an enrichment to an ongoing case,” Budi said.
