Indonesian language gains global ground as UNESCO recognizes “Bahasa Indonesia”
Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Abdul Mu’ti has announced that Bahasa Indonesia has not only been recognized as an official language in meetings of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), but is now also being taught in dozens of countries worldwide.
“Alhamdulillah (Thank God), during the previous period, Bahasa Indonesia was designated as an official language in UNESCO meetings. God willing, this November, if permitted by the President, I will attend a UNESCO conference and, for the first time, deliver a speech in Bahasa Indonesia,” Mu’ti said during a media conference at the Ministry of Education office in Central Jakarta on Wednesday, October 22, 2025.
According to Mu’ti, the use of Bahasa Indonesia in international forums represents global recognition of Indonesia’s cultural values and national identity.
He said further that the Bahasa Indonesia for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) program has expanded significantly and is now being conducted in 57 countries. The program serves as a vital instrument to introduce the Indonesian language to the world.
In addition, Mu’ti revealed that a new Department of Indonesian Language Studies will soon open at Al-Azhar University in Egypt, attracting strong interest from students.
“Around 300 students have already expressed interest in enrolling,” he said.
“God willing, we will soon visit Al-Azhar University to meet the Grand Sheikh and express our full support for the internationalization of the Indonesian language,” Mu’ti added.
