Government announces major transport fare discounts for Xmas, New Year holidays
Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Airlangga Hartarto, announced on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, a series of discounted fares for public transportation during the upcoming Christmas and New Year holiday season, a policy expected to benefit up to 36 million travelers across Indonesia.
The discount program, which covers air travel, trains, ferries, and sea vessels, will run from December 2025 through January 2026. According to Airlangga, the reductions will range between 12 percent and 75 percent depending on the mode of transport.
“Air ticket prices will be reduced between 12 percent and 14 percent through a combination of government-covered value-added tax and lower jet fuel prices,” Airlangga told a press conference at Wisma Danantara, Jakarta.
The air travel discounts will apply to tickets purchased between October 22, 2025 and January 10, 2026, for flights scheduled from December 22, 2025 through January 10, 2026.
Train fares, meanwhile, will be discounted by 30 percent over the peak holiday period from December 22, 2025 to January 10, 2026. Airlangga did not specify the quota of discounted tickets available.
Ferry tickets will see the steepest reductions, with up to 75 percent discounts offered from December 10, 2025 through January 10, 2026. As for sea travel, passengers will enjoy free trips during the period from October 22, 2025 to January 10, 2026.
Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi confirmed that the government was continuing its practice of offering discounted fares during major holiday seasons, similar to the discounts granted during the Idul Fitri holiday earlier this year.
“The rate of airfare discounts is the same as during Lebaran [Idul Fitri], at up to 14 percent,” Dudy said on Tuesday, September 30, 2025.
“Discounts also apply to other modes of transport 23 percent for ferry crossings, 30 percent for train tickets, and 100 percent for sea transport,” he cited.
Dudy emphasized that the program is not only aimed at easing the financial burden on travelers but also at supporting mobility and economic activity across regions.
“Christmas and New Year’s holidays are no longer solely religious holidays, but have become part of a broader travel season for Indonesians,” he said.
