Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Airlangga Hartarto, said that the import tariff policy by U.S. President Donald J. Trump opened up opportunities for growth of several local commodities, such as textiles and textile products (TPT).

President Trump previously increased import tariffs on Indonesian products to the U.S. by 32 percent. However, Airlangga noted that the tariff did not apply to textile products, such as apparel and footwear, because they were considered not strategic commodities.

"So, these commodities can be negotiated with the government. Yesterday, Nike Inc. and several TPT companies requested an online meeting with the government directly," Airlangga said on Tuesday, April 8, 2025.

Airlangga also sees an opportunity for Indonesia to take over market share from competing countries, such as China, Vietnam, Cambodia and Bangladesh, as the tariffs imposed by the U.S. in these countries are higher than Indonesia.

Airlangga assessed that the imposition of tariffs on TPT products in the U.S. would not have a major impact. He cited that the selling price received by footwear exporters in the U.S. is only US$20 (Rp339,000) per unit, while the price enjoyed by consumers in the U.S. reaches US$80 per unit.

Considering that this opportunity must be utilized quickly, Airlanga said that he will encourage TPT industry players to increase production capacity and efficiency.

In addition to TPT products, other commodities that are excluded are furniture. This is because of the trade war on wood commodities between the U.S. and Canada, which began not long ago.

Meanwhile, for gold and copper commodities, the US does not set high tariffs. Because the US has large investments in both sectors, such as PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI).

Meanwhile, Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani Indrawati assessed that several manufacturing sectors can also take advantage of the opportunity to increase tariffs in the U.S. This can indirectly increase the competitiveness of local products in the U.S.

"So we have to see what commodities have the potential to make Indonesia the main supplier in the United States by looking at certain commodities whose tariffs are lower than other countries," Sri Mulyani said on Tuesday, April 8, 2025.
